In Patagonia (1977) made the name as a travel writer, though Chatwin preferred the description of storyteller, drawn to unusual tales. On the Black Hill (1982) took the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and Utz (1988) reached the Booker Prize shortlist. In 2008 The Times placed Chatwin 46th among the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.
