Cornell Woolrich (1903–1968) was an American novelist and short story writer who also published as William Irish and George Hopley. Crime and suspense fill the catalogue: 61 books from Cover Charge (1926) onward, the 1940s the busiest decade, with The Bride Wore Black (1940), The Black Curtain (1941) and Black Alibi (1942) among them. Biographer Francis Nevins Jr. rated Woolrich the fourth best crime writer of his day, behind Dashiell Hammett, Erle Stanley Gardner and Raymond Chandler. Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954) came from the 1942 story It Had to Be Murder, and François Truffaut filmed The Bride Wore Black in 1968.
