Dante Alighieri (c. 1265–1321) was an Italian poet, writer and philosopher. His Divine Comedy, the Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, is counted among the most important poems of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. Dante called the poem simply Comedìa; Giovanni Boccaccio attached the word Divina to it later. Eleven works are catalogued under his name, among them the Convivio, De Vulgari Eloquentia, De Monarchia and the Rime, and English translations account for much of the listing.
