Gary Michael Krist, born in 1957, is an American writer of fiction, nonfiction, travel journalism and literary criticism. Krist began with the story collections The Garden State (1988) and Bone By Bone (1994) and the novels Bad Chemistry, Chaos Theory and Extravagance. Narrative nonfiction followed: The White Cascade (2007) on the 1910 Wellington avalanche, City of Scoundrels (2012) on Chicago in the summer of 1919 and Empire of Sin (2014) on New Orleans reform battles around 1900. The Mirage Factory (2018) and Trespassers at the Golden Gate (2025) are the newest of 10 catalogued books.
