J.D. Salinger (January 1, 1919 to January 27, 2010) was an American writer whose best-known work is the 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger published short stories in Story magazine in 1940, then served in the Second World War. "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" appeared in The New Yorker in 1948, and the magazine went on to publish much of Salinger's later work. The Catcher in the Rye sold widely from the start and drew controversy, and its portrait of adolescent alienation and lost innocence influenced young readers in particular. The catalogue also lists Nine Stories (1953), Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour (1955) and Franny and Zooey (1961).
