A former Catholic priest, James Carroll (born January 22, 1943) is an American novelist, historian and journalist. Carroll writes about efforts to reform the Catholic Church, and his books cover religion and history as well as fiction. He holds nine honorary doctorates and is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
