Five books carry the name: A Rip in Heaven, a 2004 memoir drawing on a Missouri murder case, then four novels, The Outside Boy in 2010, The Crooked Branch in 2013, American Dirt in 2020 and Speak to Me of Home in 2025. American Dirt sold more than three million copies and appeared in 37 languages; it also drew sustained criticism within the American literary community, which read it as cultural exploitation.
