Jonathan Lethem is an American novelist, essayist and short story writer, born 19 February 1964. Lethem's first novel, Gun, With Occasional Music (1994), combined science fiction with detective fiction. Motherless Brooklyn (1999) won the National Book Critics Circle Award, and The Fortress of Solitude (2003) became a New York Times Best Seller. Lethem received a MacArthur Fellowship in 2005 and has taught creative writing at Pomona College since 2011.
