Katie Kitamura is an American novelist, journalist and art critic, born in 1979, known for minimalist and psychologically intense prose about identity, performance and the fragility of human connection. Seven books are catalogued from 2000 to 2025. The first two are nonfiction about Japan, Bushido: Legacies of Japanese Tattoos (2000) and Japanese for Travellers (2007), and the novels follow: The Longshot (2009), Gone to the Forest (2012), A Separation (2017), Intimacies (2021) and Audition (2025). A Separation and Intimacies brought international recognition, and Audition was shortlisted for the 2025 Booker Prize and was a finalist for the 2026 Pulitzer Prize. Kitamura teaches creative writing at New York University.
