Nicholas Blake was the pen name Cecil Day-Lewis used for mystery fiction. Day-Lewis (1904-1972) was an Anglo-Irish poet and Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1968 until his death, and worked as a publications editor at the Ministry of Information during the Second World War; he was the father of the actor Daniel Day-Lewis and the chef Tamasin Day-Lewis. Nigel Strangeways is the detective of most of the Blake novels, starting with A Question of Proof (1935). Twenty-two titles are catalogued, The Beast Must Die (1938) and Minute for Murder (1947) among them.
