Columns for Field & Stream from 1977 and Outdoor Life from 1983 were collected into books, beginning at A Fine and Pleasant Misery (1978) and continuing through They Shoot Canoes, Don't They? (1981), Never Sniff a Gift Fish (1983) and The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw (1989). McManus later wrote the Sheriff Bo Tully mysteries.
