Robert K. Massie (1929-2019) was an American journalist and historian who spent much of his career on the Romanovs, Russia's imperial family from 1613 to 1917. Nicholas and Alexandra (1967) opens his catalogue and became a British film in 1971 with Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman; Peter the Great: His Life and World (1980) won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 1981; and Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman (2011) closes the run with awards of its own. Dreadnought (1991) and Castles of Steel (2003) turn to the naval rivalry between Britain and Germany around the First World War. Nine books in all, running long at a median of 634 pages.
