The Tattooist of Auschwitz is historical fiction drawn from interviews with Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau in April 1942. His captors learned he spoke several languages and set him to tattooing the other prisoners; Sokolov survived more than two and a half years there. Heather Morris followed the 2018 novel with Cilka's Journey (2019) and Three Sisters (2021). The Holocaust, Jewish survivors and sisters run through the subjects of all three.
