Charles Portis (1933-2020) was an American novelist best known for Norwood (1966) and the Western True Grit (1968). Norwood reached the screen in 1970 and True Grit in 1969, with a film sequel, a television sequel and a second adaptation in 2010 after it. Four more books follow: The Dog of the South (1979), Masters of Atlantis (1985), Gringos (1991) and Escape Velocity (2012). Travellers, outlaws, US marshals, revenge and eccentrics run through the work, treated with humour. The Library of America published his Collected Works in 2023.
