David Foster Wallace (1962-2008) was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist and professor. Infinite Jest (1996), his second novel, is the book he is best known for, and the Los Angeles Times critic David Ulin called him one of the most influential and innovative writers of the previous twenty years. Wallace grew up in Illinois and studied at Amherst College and the University of Arizona; his Amherst thesis on philosophy and modal logic became his first novel, The Broom of the System (1987).
