Erich Maria Remarque, born Erich Paul Remark on 22 June 1898, was a German novelist who died on 25 September 1970. All Quiet on the Western Front drew on Remarque's service in the Imperial German Army during World War I; the novel became an international bestseller, was filmed several times and began a new genre of veterans writing about conflict. Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels condemned Remarque as unpatriotic for the anti-war themes. Remarque moved to Switzerland as a refugee and later became a naturalised citizen of the United States. The catalogue holds 14 books, from All Quiet on the Western Front (1929) and The Road Back (1931) to Eight Stories: Tales of War and Loss (2018), including Three Comrades (1936) and Arch of Triumph (1945).
