Eva Ibbotson was an Austrian-born British novelist who lived from 1925 to 2010 and wrote mainly for children. Twenty-eight books are catalogued between The Great Ghost Rescue (1975) and Magic Flutes, dated 2025, among them Which Witch? (1979), A Countess Below Stairs (1981), A Company of Swans (1985) and Madensky Square (1988); several of the adult novels were later reissued for young adult readers. Journey to the River Sea (2001) won the Smarties Prize in the 9 to 11 category, was a commended runner-up for the Guardian Prize and reached the Carnegie, Whitbread and Blue Peter shortlists. The last book, The Abominables, was a Guardian Prize finalist in 2012. Ghosts, witches, magic, orphans and opera recur as subjects.
