Ken Kesey, born in 1935 and died in 2001, was an American novelist, essayist and countercultural figure who described himself as the link between the Beat Generation of the 1950s and the hippies of the 1960s. Kesey grew up in Springfield, Oregon and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1957; he started One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, his psychiatric-hospital novel, in 1960 after a creative writing fellowship at Stanford, and its 1962 publication was an immediate commercial and critical success. Twelve catalogued titles follow, among them Sometimes A Great Notion (1964), Demon Box (1986) and Sailor Song (1992).

Ken Liu, born Kenneth Yukun Liu in 1976, is an American writer of science fiction and fantasy and a winner of multiple Hugo and Nebula Awards. Liu's short fiction has appeared in F&SF, Asimov's Science Fiction, Analog, Lightspeed, Clarkesworld and Uncanny Magazine, among others. The Dandelion Dynasty, Liu's first epic fantasy series, is described as silkpunk, a term Liu coined for its blend of East Asian antiquity's material culture and philosophy into an alternative modernity. The catalogue holds 26 books from The Caretaker (2011) to The Passing of the Dragon and Other Stories (2026), including Good Hunting (2012) and Mono no Aware (2012), and origami and Japanese fiction in translation appear among the subjects.
